NetQoS Addresses WAN Application Delivery Challenges in Podcast Series

Network engineers faced with the challenges of application performance across the wide area network (WAN) gained a new resource with the NetQoS Performance Edge Podcast Series debut. The first installment features an interview with industry analyst Dr. Jim Metzler about the network engineer’s evolving role in optimizing application performance.

During the podcast, Dr. Metzler, president of Ashton, Metzler & Associates, will discuss the state of the industry in managing the delivery of application services over enterprise networks and the basis of his forthcoming multi-client study on “Defining the Application Delivery Value Chain.” According to Dr. Metzler, while a defined process exists for application development, many IT organizations have less well-defined responsibilities for application delivery and ownership of application performance. As application delivery over the WAN becomes more complex, the responsibility for application performance is increasingly falling to network engineers, who should take the lead on it.

Paessler Announces PRTG Traffic Grapher 6, Bandwidth and Traffic Monitoring Software

Paessler, the network monitoring company, today announces the availability of PRTG Traffic Grapher 6, the latest version of the popular network monitoring and bandwidth usage solution.

The Windows(R)-based and Web-based user interfaces have been improved to help system administrators easily manage networks of any size, from small Local Area Networks (LANs) to large installations with thousands of sensors. Sensors can now be associated with tags, to categorize items in multiple views, similar to the tagging principles that have become popular on Web 2.0 sites. The list of sensors can then be filtered based on these tags for easy navigation even in large setups with many sensors.

Cisco Systems Delivers NAC Appliance 4.0

Cisco Systems(R) (NASDAQ:CSCO) today announced the delivery of NAC Appliance 4.0, the latest edition of the company’s Network Admission Control solution designed to protect businesses from information security risks ushered in by non-compliant users and devices.

Designed to address the growing business and information technology security challenges caused by increasingly unpredictable threats, the appliance builds on Cisco’s vision of NAC by providing policy enforcement at network entry points throughout a distributed enterprise. It features significant policy-enforcement capabilities for protecting local-area networks (LANs) as well as remote office, virtual private networks (VPNs) and wireless access points.

Since Cisco released NAC in 2003, the marketplace has witnessed a flurry of related offerings. The role of Cisco’s NAC Appliance 4.0 extends well beyond point products available in the marketplace today. The NAC Appliance addresses network access across all segments of an enterprise network—wired, wireless and remote—covering all network entry points and, in turn, establishing itself as an integral part of a business’ network security infrastructure.
