WildPackets Integrates Network Forensics into OmniAnalysis Platform v4.0

WildPackets, Inc., innovators in advanced network analysis, today announced support for network forensics analysis in the WildPackets OmniAnalysis Platform. Network forensics presents a unique set of challenges in the areas of data capture, data discovery and data analysis. Leveraging the powerful combination of new features and a long history of expert data analysis, WildPackets delivers an industry-leading software solution that addresses these unique challenges in a single, integrated platform. Network administrators can use WildPackets’ network forensics features to troubleshoot network problems, including issues that have occurred hours or even days before. Compliance officers can use WildPackets’ network forensics features to discover or verify compliance violations, including violations related to server or network access or illicit transmission of data.

Data Capture in Network Forensics

Three specific issues must be addressed when capturing network forensics data: determining the optimal locations to capture the data, handling high-utilization networks and data storage. WildPackets offers a truly distributed solution, enabling data capture at multiple, critical network nodes, whether wired or wireless, and from local or remote network segments, including Gigabit and WAN segments, leveraging hardware-accelerated collection devices as necessary. The flexible deployment options available with the OmniAnalysis Platform allow it to be scaled for any level of data storage.

Data Discovery in Network Forensics

Network forensics exercises produce large amounts of data, especially when collection is performed at a multi-Gigabit network core. A network forensics solution must provide the means to easily organize, filter and pinpoint the data of interest. New features in the OmniAnalysis Platform enable analysts to index collected network traffic and search across multiple data collection files. New search windows allow users to quickly and efficiently target their searches to a specific area of interest, time period, an offending IP address or some other network characteristic. This is done remotely, at the point of collection, eliminating the need to transfer large amounts of information to a centralized location for processing. The distributed nature of the OmniAnalysis Platform allows for data discovery at all monitored network nodes, simultaneously, making data discovery highly efficient.

Data Analysis in Network Forensics

A full-featured network forensics solution must turn bytes into actionable information and report these results clearly and concisely. The WildPackets forensics feature allows analysts to comb through terabytes of information and automatically identify problems occurring on the network by using its Expert-analysis technology. The OmniAnalysis Platform’s rich visual interface can display data as independent conversations, making analysis far more intuitive.

About WildPackets OmniAnalysis Platform

The OmniAnalysis Platform gives network engineers real-time visibility into every part of the network—simultaneously from a single console—including Gigabit, 10/100, 802.11 wireless, VoIP and WAN links to remote offices. Using the OmniAnalysis Platform’s local capture capabilities, centralized console, distributed engines and expert analysis, engineers can rapidly troubleshoot faults and fix problems, restoring essential services and maximizing network uptime and user satisfaction. Of all network analyzers and consoles available today, only OmniPeek enables network engineers to monitor multiple parts of the network simultaneously and independently—an important capability when engineers know there’s a problem but not where it is.
